The World’s Largest “Concrete” Gnome lives in the Reiman Gardens on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The gardens are located at 1407 University Blvd. near Jack Trice Stadium.
Known as Elwood, the pudgy gnome statue stands fifteen feet tall and weighs 3,500 pounds. The statue’s iron-welded cage of metal lath is covered in one cubic yard of concrete.
The statue was fabricated by Andy and Connie Kautza, artisans at the National Rock & Sculpture in Wausau, WI. Build at the cost of $8,000 of privately-raised funds. Elwood was officially unveiled on April 22, 2010, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
Elwood is listed in the “Guinness Book of World Records” as the World’s tallest gnome. Previously, a 13-foot, 6-inch gnome named Chomsky in upstate New York held the title. He stands in front of miniature golf course on Kelder’s Farm in Kerhonkson, NY and is known as the World’s Largest Garden Gnome.
There is rumored to be an 18-foot-tall gnome statue in Poland, but it is made of fiberglass.
