The Troll Tavern – Helen, Georgia


The Troll Tavern is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in the town of Helen, Georgia at 8590-B North Main Street on State Highway 17/75. The tavern is about 90 miles northeast of Atlanta and approximately 9 miles northeast of U.S. Highway 129.

As one might expect, the “Troll” tavern is nestled under a bridge in the lower level the Castle Inn on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. The restaurant’s waterfront view affords guests the opportunity to watch tubers float down the river.

Established in 2005, the family-friendly restaurant and bar caters to locals, and tourists alike. The tavern menu includes such German fare as Combo Wurst Platter, Bratwurst Platter, Knockwurst Platter, Weiner Schnitzel Platter, and Wurst On A Bun.

Besides, the tavern’s authentic German food, it also offers appetizers, sandwiches, Mexican foods, smoked pork chops, chicken dishes, seafood, a variety of pastas, vegetarian dishes, and tasty desserts.

And, of course, in honor the restaurants’s name, there is the The Troll Muffaletta, a huge Ham & salami sandwich baked with Swiss, provolone, Monterey jack & cheddar cheeses on a large toasted bun with lettuce, tomato, onion & the house vinaigrette and “troll” muffaletta relish.


The town of Helen, Georgia is a re-creation of an alpine village, complete with cobblestone alleys, towers and old-world charm. In 1969, the former logging village decided to upgrade the town’s look by turning the sleepy northern Georgia hamlet into a Bavarian tourist attraction. Each year the town sponsors an Octoberfest, as well as an annual Balloon Festival.

The town offers 200 shops in the downtown area, selling all kinds of imported goods. Irish linens, Russian nesting dolls, German and Austrian imported wines, and Danish potato dumpling mixes.

Visitors to the charming Alpine village can also stay in the nearby Helendorf River Inn Suites and Conference Center at 33 Munich Strasse.

NOTE: There is also much smaller roadside tavern named Trolls Tavern at 1286 Old Belfast Road in Lewisburg, Tennessee 37091.

Born in Philadelphia, Jerome Alphonse Holst worked 30 years as a librarian. He has since retired and lives in Thomasville, North Carolina. Mr. Holst is also the author of the children’s books “Norman the Troll,” "Norman the Troll and the Haunted House," and "Gretchen and the Gremlins." In addition, he penned the fantasy novel “The Adventures of Glinda Gale,” a retelling of “The Wizard of Oz" and the reference text “The Encyclopedia of Movie and TV Insults.” .
