The Gnome Tree Carving is located at 10408 Old US 22 in Kutztown, Pennsylvania, between the towns of Krumsville and New Smithville. Standing about 15 feet tall, the gnome tree rests on the corner of Fritz Court and Old US 22 in the parking lot of the O. J. Fritz Showroom and Garage (Hudson Motor Cars sign outside).

This unique roadside attraction answers the question: “What do you do with the remains of an old tree on the side of the road?” Well, after most of the branches were removed, an artist envisioned a gnome holding an owl in its upraised right arm and set about freeing the image from the tree trunk so it could greet motorists and pedestrians passing by.

A similar tree trunk carving down the highway and to the left features a gnome totem pole with faces and torsos of gnomes and a gabled-roof capping off the carving.

The owl tree carving came into being in the mid-2000s when its branches were labeled a “nuisance” because overhanging electrical wires running along the street were always getting tangled in
the tree. And so, after the utility company lopped off its branches, a roadside attraction was born.

NOTE: The O. J. Fritz Showroom and Garage houses mint-condition Hudson Motor Cars and other antique cars from the 20s, 30s, 40s and some from the 50s. Another car collection can be found at the Old Spokes Auto Museum at 10399 on Old Rt 22 in nearby New Smithville, Pennsylvania.
