In folklore, Rumpelstiltzkin was a dwarf with supernatural powers who helped a maiden spin straw into gold to save the life of her boastful father. In exchange for helping the maiden, the dwarf demanded as payment, the maiden’s first-born child. But after the child was born, the maiden was reluctant to give her baby away. Rumpelstiltzkin then gave the girl three days to guess his name or he would take possession of the child. Luckily, the dwarf revealed his name while dancing around a fire in the woods. One the third day, the maiden spoke his true name and Rumpelstilzkin was so mad that he stomped on the ground and fell into the earth, never to be seen again.
Robert Carlyle plays the role of Rumplestiltskin, a malevolent wizard on the ABC fantasy ONCE UPON A TIME (2011).
According to the TV series “Rumplestiltskin is the Dark One, the greatest deceiver in a land where things are rarely what they seem. If you’ve found yourself in a deal with Rumplestiltskin, your luck has just run out. Magic always comes at a cost, and everyone foolish or desperate enough to make a deal with him finds this out the hard way…Gnomish, intense, and crazy, he’s the malevolent trickster who can spin straw into gold and prefers his payment in the form of firstborn children. An expert on black magic and the dark arts, this creature has wizardly powers to make him a fair match for anyone in the land…even the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla).”
