Queen Lillian is the fabled evil queen from the Snow White tale who now resides in the 20th century at 427 Van Oakland Boulevard in Van Oaks (Burbank), California on the ABC fantasy comedy THE CHARMINGS (1987-88).
A long time ago, Queen Lillian White (played by Judy Parfitt) got so angry at her stepdaughter Snow White that she cast a sleeping spell so powerful that it caught her in its wake as well.
“Once upon a time there was a vain queen who was so jealous of her beautiful stepdaughter Snow White that she poisoned her with an apple, but a handsome prince came along and broke the spell. Snow White and Prince Charming threw the wicked stepmother down a bottomless pit and lived happily ever after.
But it turns out the pit wasn’t bottomless, just very deep, and now the queen was very mad. With a spell so powerful even she couldn’t control it, she put the Charmings asleep for a thousand years. She also got herself and one dwarf.
Eventually they woke up…”
Waking 1000 year later, Lillian now reluctantly shares a residence with The Charming family, which included Snow White, Prince Eric Charming, their two young sons Thomas and Cory, and a dwarf named Luther.
As she did so many years earlier, Lillian still consults a magic mirror on the wall when she needs advice (“Mirror, Mirror, let’s get down, who’s the hottest witch in town?”) or someone to share her woes. The mirror, however, is not that impressed with Lillian and it often harasses her.
NOTE: A similar storyline can be found on the ABC fantasy dram series ONCE UPON A TIME that premiered on October 23, 2011, on ABC. The show takes place in the fictional seaside town of Storybrooke, Maine, whose residents are actually characters from various fairy tales transported to the “real world” town and robbed of their real memories by the Evil Queen Regina (Lana Parrilla), using a powerful curse obtained from Rumplestiltskin (Robert Carlyle).
Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), the daughter of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas), is the only person who can break the curse and restore the characters’ lost memories.
She was transported as an infant from Misthaven in the Enchanted World to the “real world” before the Queen cast her evil spell. Sort of like the parents of Superman sent their child Kal-El through intergalactic space to save him from the doomed world of Krypton.
