Ghostbusters – New York City, NY

Ghostbusters are a group of paranormal investigators for hire featured in the films “Ghostbusters” (1984) and the sequel “Ghostbusters II” (1989).

Members of this pseudo-scientific group include Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), three unemployed parapsychologists from Columbia University who set up shop in a converted fire station in New York City.

Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) joins to team later to assist the over-worked ghost hunters. Their receptionist is Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts).

To advertise their services, the Ghostbusters used the catchphrase “Who ya gonna call?…GHOSTBUSTERS! Call 555-2368” for those who discover somethin’ strange or weird in their neighborhood.

When the Ghostbusters get a call to subdue disruptive supernatural apparitions, they hop into a white converted ambulance (License: ECTO-1) and rush to their destination.

To capture their paranormal prey, they used a gadget called a Proton Pack Gun which neutralizes ghostly spirits who are then placed into a specially built “containment unit” in the firehouse basement.

NOTE: The Ghostbuster later appeared in the ABC fantasy comedy cartoon THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS (1986-88) and in the revamped ABC cartoon series SLIMER! AND THE REAL GHOSTBUSTERS (1988-92).

Slimer, a green blob of ectoplasm who “slimed” people with gobs of gooey green slime (first seen in the movies) appeared as a recurring companion to the Ghostbusters on the animated series.

In 1997, a syndicated continuation of the Ghostbusters saga entitled EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS featured Slimer, Janine their receptionist, Egon and a group of four university physics students (Eduardo, Kylie, Garrett, and Roland) who were enrolled in Dr. Egon Spengler’s Paranormal class. When trouble raised it ugly head in the New York underground, Egon enlisted their help to battle eerie supernatural phenomenon.

The headquarters for the Ghostbusters in the movie (the exterior shot) was an actual New York City Hook and Ladder 8 Fire House located in the Upper West Side of Manhattan at North Moore Street.
