Gnome March – Atlanta, GA

Gnome March is an annual event held as part of the Inman Park Festival at 1020-1026 Euclid Ave NE, Atlanta, Georgia. The first gathering was in April of 2007.

Espousing such phrases as “Gnomes gnever give up,” “There’s gno place like gnome,” “Gnomeland Security,” “Paragnomal Activity,” and “Gnomes do it on your lawn,” participants in the Gnome March don gnome attire (red felt hat, beards, boots) in an effort to bring attention to important gnome issues: gnomophobia, dandelion genocide, legalizing weed, etc.

The Gnome March is sponsored by the Krewe of the Grateful Gluttons & the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club. It is their desire to break the Guinness World Record for Most People Dressed as Garden Gnomes. Wanna-be gnomes are instructed to line-up at Edgewood at Waddell.

Called “silly,” the Gnome March has now become a tradition within the similarly goofy Inman Park Festival Parade. Both events allow residence of Atlanta to come together and simply have a lovely time.

By 2010, the Gnome Parade managed to gather 108 gnomes but alas their efforts fell short. In 2011, they lost out to a bunch of Canadians affiliated with the film, “Gnomio and Juliet” when 266 people dressed as garden gnomes attended a screening of “Gnomeo & Juliet” on Feb. 21 in Toronto, Canada, setting a new Guinness World Record.

Then came a British group with 478 gnomes who assembled at the Foyer of Malvern Theatres in Worcester, UK, on 18 November 2011 (The current champions).

But these gnasty defeats did not discourage the sponsors of the Gnome March. According to them, it is their Gamerican duty to win the event, so the challenge goes on.

To be eligible to win the competition, the Gnome Marchers must follow these rules from the Guinness World Records North America, Inc.

A full male gnome costume consists of the following:

  • One of the following outfits: collared shirt and vest OR brightly coloured tunic and belt OR pair of overalls
  • Beard.
  • Pointed hat.
  • Boots.

A full female gnome costume consists of the following:

  • One of the following outfits: solid-coloured or patterned dress with apron OR shirt and skirt with suspenders OR pair of overalls.
  • Pointed hat.
  • Boots.

Any participants not dressed in the full costume must be discounted from the final total.

Additional gnome parades occur in Savannah, Georgia, Cleveland, Ohio, and Gnome Fest, Tucson, Arizona.

NOTE: Inman Park is home to many historic homes and parks. The Inman Park Festival began in the early 1970s as a means to attract attention to gentrification efforts that sought to revitalize the community. The festival offers music, kids activities, a Tour of Homes, a marvelous street parade, and an artists’ market.
