Garden Gnome Run – Corvallis, OR

Garden Gnome Run is an annual event sponsored by the Community Services Consortium Youth Garden at 545 SW 2nd St., Suite A in Corvallis, Oregon. It supports Benton County youth and sustainable, local food.

The first Garden Gnome Run debuted on Sunday May 5, 2013. It featured a 1K (0.62 miles), 5K (3.1 miles), 10K (6.2 miles) and, as of 2014, a 15K (9.3 miles) race.

The race starts and finishes in the CSC parking lot at the southwest corner of 2nd and Western, kitty-corner from the CSC Youth Garden in downtown Corvallis. The flat, paved course follows the bike path in Southwest Corvallis through beautiful Avery, Pioneer Parks and Starker Arts Park.

All entrants receive a Youth House tomato plant and a gnome-themed glass finisher “medal.” Awards are available for the top 3 men and women finishers in each age division. Gnome T-shirts are available for sale for $12. Loaner gnomes were also available for runners to carry with them during the run.

The event features crafts and plants for sale, food booth selling crepes, coloring tables set up for kids, wooden gnome cutouts for people to stand behind to get their photographs, live music, raffles and runners wearing gnome costumes.

NOTE: The CSC Youth Garden is a living, learning environment, a community demonstration site and a small business. It features raised beds, cold frames, compost bins, chickens, a greenhouse and a hoop house all in downtown Corvallis! We have also expanded to the Children’s Farm Home on Highway 20 where we tend an additional half-acre site, including newly planted berry beds.

Each season, 10 Benton County youth are responsible for caring for 49 raised beds and a half-acre of farm land, without the use of herbicides or pesticides. It encourages learning, entrepreneurship and work readiness in Benton County youth through locally grown and distributed produce.

In the fall, there is a Great Pumpkin Run 5K at the Benton County Fairgrounds on Sunday morning. The event, in its 24th year, is a fundraiser for Home Life, a Benton County nonprofit that provides services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Runners are welcome to wear their Halloween finest as they run for a good cause.
