The Gnome tree is located at 1960 Main Road at Hallock’s Cider Mill in Laurel, New York. The property is owned by Marianne and Wayne Hallock, who live next door to the farm stand and bakery in an old North Fork farmhouse built in 1860.
The idea for making a Gnome tree happened after a snowstorm caused the top of an old maple tree to split and fall to the ground. Instead of cutting the tree down, the Hallock’s hired a local carpenter to trim back the remaining branches of the tree flush with the tree’s trunk.
At this point, a series of small and colorful doors and windows were attached to the tree trunk so the tree resembled an enchanted high-rise for gnomes. There are plans to adding a little mailbox at the base of the tree so children can leave letters for the gnomes living in the tree.
